About Mealworms
Mealworms (Tenebrio molitor) are one of the most effective ways to support birds and all small pets — especially during the breeding season.
They provide around 60% protein and essential moisture, making them ideal for feeding chicks who can’t yet digest seed.
They’re also suitable for all bird ages and species, and DEFRA approval means they’re perfectly safe for hens too.
Keep a bag of dried mealworms on hand as a backup for when you run out — they’re great for mixing with suet or seed.
1. How to Serve (Preparation)
Dry Directly: You can serve them straight from the bag on a bird table, tray feeder, or mixed with seed mixes.
Rehydration (Recommended): To make them softer and more palatable—especially for young birds and in Pakistan’s dry summer months—soak them in warm water for 15–30 minutes until they are plump. Drain the excess water before serving.
Mix with Food: Blend dry mealworms into your existing poultry mash, bird seed, or reptile feed to increase protein content.
2. Best Feeding Practices
Amount: Offer in small quantities. A small handful per bird per day is sufficient as they are a treat, not a complete diet.
Timing: Early morning and late afternoon are the best times to feed wild birds.
Hygiene: Feed in a designated dry area (tray or dish) to avoid spoilage. Clean feeders regularly to prevent mold.
Ant Management: To keep ants away, you can use specialized feeders or place the dish on a raised, cleaned surface.
3. Seasonal Tips for Pakistan
Breeding/Spring Season: Critical time for high protein. Offer rehydrated mealworms near nesting areas to support chick development.
Summer: Essential to soak the mealworms in water to help birds stay hydrated.
Winter: Provides extra fat and energy during cold spells.
